Layers

Layer 1:

Fine sand: Continental and is the most common form of sand found within the earth. It is formed from quartz and other minerals. This sand is usually yellow with specks of black within. This sand is very small, this will mean it will filter out small specs of dirt and other harmful pieces of material.

Layer 2:

Activated Charcoal: Activated Charcoal can be used to filter your stomach. Activated Charcoal filtered large molecules (bacteria, viruses, etc.) and this is going to be a filter for dead/deactivated pathogens and other harmful molecules.

Layer 3:
Fine sand: An extra part of fine sand is added to prevent

Layer 4:

Gravel: Gravel is made out of tiny rocks, this can be found all around most continents, apart from desserts. These rock fragments are made out of all different types of rocks. But these remnants are chosen for the filter to clean big sized contaminators of the water that is unclean.

Layer 5:

Stones / Big Pebbles:

These pieces are made to remove the big pieces that can clog the filtration system, so these big stones can help you from removing big parts of the water. (like wood) So you can throw that away or if it is biological material that can burn you can use it to set a fire.

Removing bacteria, viruses, etc;
I will remove the bacteria, viruses, etc by boiling the water. This will kill or immobilize viruses and bacteria and other pathogens by heat. This will damage their structure and stop their way of living abruptly.
